Job Purpose / Objective

 Responsible for supervising nursing staff performance during the shift to ensure that patients receive optimal nursing care.

 Assist the Head Nurse in ensuring that all nursing staff in the unit are well-trained and competent to perform their duties as indicated in their job description. Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

 Check all department areas (vital sign room, stock, clinics, etc.) to ensure compliance with JCIA/CBAHI standards.

 Supervise the admission, discharge, and general flow of patients, ensuring efficient processes within the expected timeframe.

 Be directly involved in patient care and monitor staff performance to ensure patients receive the correct nursing care.

 Distribute shift assignments fairly, considering staff competencies, patient acuity, and patient needs.  Conduct patient rounds, assess their condition, and ensure their needs are met.

 Supervise medication management, including drug counts, proper storage, and documentation.

 Participate in doctor rounds, ensuring orders are communicated and carried out.

 Follow up on pending services or investigations to ensure they are completed on time.

 Address patient concerns, issues, and complaints, taking corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

 Report any unusual events or incidents to the nursing supervisor on duty and communicate with the Head Nurse.

 Assist staff during increased workload, new procedures, and when handling critical highrisk patients.

 Assist the Head Nurse with administrative tasks such as:

o Staff orientation and teaching o Staff evaluation and development programs

o Staff attendance monitoring

o Preparing staff rotas and staff planning

o Preparing required reports (e.g., patient census)

o Supplies and stock requisitions

o Collecting data for quality indicators

 Ensure adherence to infection control guidelines, policies, and other HMG policies and procedures. 
