Job Title: Artistic Instructor – Cultural Dance Performing Theatre
Job Summary:
The Artistic Instructor for Cultural Dance at a Performing Theatre is responsible for leading, teaching, and choreographing cultural dance performances. This role emphasizes the preservation and presentation of traditional and contemporary dance forms, helping performers refine their skills while ensuring performances reflect the cultural richness of the dances. The instructor will collaborate with Theater Director, Executive Director, Stage Manager, Costume & Props Crews, Technical Team and Performers to deliver authentic, dynamic, and visually captivating cultural dance productions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Dance Instruction:
o Teach dancers traditional and modern cultural dance styles with a focus on technique, expression, and stage performance.
o Conduct rehearsals, offering detailed feedback and support to ensure performers are ready for live shows.
o Adapt teaching methods to the varying skill levels of the performers, ensuring everyone meets the theatre’s standards of excellence.
2. Choreography Development:
o Create innovative and culturally accurate dance choreography for performances that reflect the traditions of various cultures.
o Collaborate with the theatre’s creative team to develop dances that complement the production’s theme, storytelling, and visual aesthetics.
o Revise and adapt choreography as needed based on rehearsals, production constraints, or feedback from the production team.
3. Cultural Authenticity:
o Research and maintain the cultural integrity of the dances performed, ensuring accurate representation of traditions, costumes, and music.
o Engage in continuous learning to stay informed about new trends, traditional practices, and contemporary interpretations of cultural dance.
4. Production Collaboration:
o Work with costume designers, set designers, and lighting/sound technicians to ensure that all elements of the performance support the artistic vision of the dance sequences.
o Attend production meetings to align the choreography with the overall vision and logistical elements of the show.
o Offer creative solutions for integrating dance with the other performance aspects, including staging, transitions, and special effects.
5. Performance Oversight:
o Ensure performers are prepared for live theatre performances, overseeing final rehearsals and making last-minute adjustments.
o Provide real-time feedback and instructions during dress rehearsals to polish the performance.
o Be present during shows to offer support to performers and make adjustments as needed.
6. Mentoring & Development:
o Mentor dancers, helping them develop both their technical dance abilities and their understanding of the cultural significance behind the performances.
o Foster a creative, supportive environment that encourages dancers to grow and collaborate as a team.
o Provide individualized coaching to performers to enhance their personal artistry and stage presence.
Skills & Qualifications:
• Strong background in cultural dance forms, with expertise in traditional and contemporary performance styles.
• Experience in choreography and dance instruction, particularly for live stage performances.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a theatre production team, including directors, designers, and performers.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills to guide and motivate performers of all experience levels.
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Proven experience in dance performance, choreography, and instruction, preferably in a theatre setting.
• Experience working with diverse cultural dance forms and in live performance environments.
Work Environment:
• Theatre-based work, with frequent rehearsals and performances in a stage setting.
• Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate rehearsal and performance times.
