A warehouse assistant helps with various tasks to maintain the day-to-day operations of a warehouse. Warehousing refers to the process of storing an inventory of goods before distribution or sale. It is an important component of the storage and logistics industry because it allows businesses to retain a store of products even as consumer demand fluctuates, ensuring a continual supply. Moreover, it enables the purchase of bulk orders, which tend to cost less, expedites delivery by allowing for storage in multiple locations and reduces shipping costs because of shorter delivery times. Warehouse operations typically comprise these duties:
- Receiving: acquiring products in specified quantities at a warehouse facility
- Putting away: moving received products to optimal locations within a warehouse facility
- Storing: keeping products in their designated locations until shipping
- Picking: collecting stored products to fulfil customers' orders
- Packing: consolidating and preparing products in a customer's order
- Shipping: transporting a customer's order to a specified destination
Warehouse assistants facilitate operations by taking part in virtually every one of the above tasks. When receiving, they ensure that the right goods, in the right quantities, have arrived. They then assist in moving the goods within the warehouse and storing them appropriately. Then, when orders arrive, they locate the goods and help to pack them. Aside from these activities, warehouse assistants might also perform these duties:
- Carrying out quality assurance checks on products
- Scanning product codes
- Weighing products within orders
- Confirming delivery addresses and postage costs
- Printing and adhering shipping labels
- Taking note of damaged or returned products
- Using supply chain software to optimise operations
- Helping to oversee other teams
