DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY OF DUTIES Responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital. Such nursing care is an an integral part of the individualized holistic patient care plan as directed by the Medical staff according to the hospital’s Policies and Procedures and in keeping with the generally accepted principles, policies and procedures of the Nursing Services. ROLE AS NURSE IN ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services. • Works shift duties or as assigned by Nurse Manager according to the Unit’s Operational Hours • Informs Nurse Manager when change occurs in circumstances that affect care standards. • Provides individualized holistic care using the Nursing Process approach with proper nursing documentation in patients’ Hospital Information System. • Any other duties as ordered by Nurse Manager:-this job description is subject to periodic review and may be changed anytime in consultation with the employee. • Performs any other job-related duties not specified in this job description when assigned by the immediate supervisor, including deployment and rotation to other nursing services • Attending ambulance cases of transfer in and transfer out of patients safely to/from other healthcare services when required. • Assist the Nurse Manager in overseeing the smooth running of A&E Services • Conduct initial assessment or triaging of the patient before assigning the patient to the appropriate zone. • Knows the cases in detail • Complete the triage assessment • Inform Medical Officer on the duty of any cases that come for treatment at Accident & Emergency Services. • Conduct top-to-toe examinations, identify abnormal findings and records in electronic medical records and inform the doctor regarding abnormality. • Determine priority and plan care according to patient records. • Identifying and managing life-threatening conditions together with other team members and doctors. • Liaises with and discusses with relevant doctors/consultants about the care of patients in A&E Services. • Perform phlebotomy and administer an intravenous infusion for adult and paediatric patients as necessary and as ordered by the medical officer/consultants. • Serve or administer medications safely and timely for A&E patients as prescribed by doctors/consultants. • Perform dressing or assist doctors/consultants in simple surgical procedures in the A&E procedure room. • Receives and hand over reports of every patient in A&E services; Including knowing the case in detail and the progress of the patient. • Ensures all orders before he /her shift has been carried to take over. • Any accident or problem encountered. • Transfer and transport patients safely to other services or wards when required. • Maintain and ensure medical equipment is working and functioning correctly at all times • Assist with admission procedures and discharge of patients, including making appointments with the specialist clinic if necessary. • Handle death cases and ensure the safe transfer of the body to the mortuary. • Performs extra duties when called upon, especially in an emergency HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT • Takes personal responsibility for professional development and keeps up to date with professional change and growth by maintaining mandatory learning hours. • Complete the Continuous Professionalism Development (CPD) requirement by active participation in the CNE programme. • Complete yearly Core Competency and Credential & Privileging if required. • Participates in the teaching program of the unit/ward and orientation of new staff members to the ward routine. • Involves in the supervision of the Junior SRN, Care Aide, Ambulance Drivers • Assists the Nurse Manager in appraising the job performance POLICIES AND PROCEDURES • Contributes suggestions in periodic revision and upgrading of Nursing Policies and Procedures and relevant work instructions. • Checks DDA drugs with the off-going Nurse In-charge • Participates in the care, custody and administration of medications following Hospital Policies and Procedures. • Checks daily and audits resuscitation trolley periodically as scheduled. • Ensure all staff complies with Prevention and Control of Infection, including implementation of surveillance activity in the unit and evidence of involvement. • Maintain confidentiality of the patient’s personal and medical history. FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT • Operates/maintains specialised equipment assigned to the unit and provides assistance/guidance to new staff in their use. • Assists the Nurse Manager in keeping accurate records of equipment, medical supplies and drugs in the unit. • Checks that all equipment in the unit is functioning well and serviced according to the PPM schedule. • Report to Bio-Medical personnel if any faulty and takes necessary action accordingly. • Assists in maintaining instruments and equipment by properly cleaning, handling, disinfecting and utilizing as directed. • Assist and check the ambulance safety with the ambulance Drives and report all faulty immediately to Nurse Manager • To ensure the ambulance transport bag is complete and in order SAFETY & QUALITY IMPROVEMENT • Fully receptive and supportive in the activities that contribute towards continuous improvement of nursing service, e.g. QualityProgramme, Infection Control and Fire and Safety Program. • Conduct investigation and root cause analysis in any service incident, takes appropriate action and ensure completion of incident reports within the stipulated time frame. • Carries out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994:- a. To take reasonable care at work for the safety of yourself and other persons; b. To co-operate with your employer or any other person in the discharge of any duty; c. To wear or use any protective equipment or clothing the employer provides. d. To comply with any instruction or measure on occupational safety and health. • Ensures compliance with Patient safety goals as safety improvement measures recommended by World Alliance for Patient Safety. • Ensures the policies on Patient and Family Rights are addressed at all times • Complies with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Breastfeeding Policy and protects, promotes and supports Baby Friendly Hospital activities. • Participates in 5S activities and comply with the specified requirements • Ensures all staff adheres to Customer Delight Practices (SPP) at all times EMPLOYEE SPECIFICATIONS & QUALIFICATIONS • Diploma/Certificate in Nursing and Registered with the Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse. • Post Basic qualification in a related field • Preferred Bachelor of Nursing • Able to write and communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. • Caring, honest and responsible worker. • Willingness to work on scheduled hours, shifts, weekends, public holidays, on-call and anytime when called during an emergency.
