Job Scope:

An Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Engineer for solar energy systems is responsible for overseeing the smooth operation and upkeep of solar power plants and related infrastructure. This role is critical to ensure the optimal performance and reliability of solar energy systems by handling day-today operations, regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring.

1. System Monitoring & Performance Optimization:

  • Monitor the performance of solar power systems through specialized software.
  • Track and analyze energy generation against expected performance.
  • Identify performance issues and inefficiencies to optimize the plant's output.
  • Ensure systems are functioning at peak performance by making necessary adjustments.

2. Preventive Maintenance:

  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of solar panels, inverters, electrical components, and other equipment.
  • Clean and inspects solar panels to prevent dirt buildup, shading, and other issues that affect energy production.
  • Perform electrical testing and checks to ensure that all components meets safety standards.

3. Troubleshooting & Repairs:

  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions in the solar system (panels, inverters, wiring).
  • Troubleshoot problems, including electrical issues, mechanical faults or system errors.
  • Coordinate or perform repairs to restore functionality to the system quickly.
  • Document repair work, parts replaced, and other relevant details.

4. Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Utilize SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) or similar software to track system performance.
  • Generate detailed reports on energy production, system status, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Report any significant operational issues to senior engineers or management.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and industry standards, including safety and environmental regulations.

5. Compliance & Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards at all times.
  • Conduct safety audits and risk assessment for the solar power plant.
  • Ensure all maintenance and operations are done with the correct safety protocols in place.
  • Monitor and enforce the plant's safety procedures for staff and contractors.

6. Vendor & Contractor Coordination:

  • Work with third-party contractors or service providers for specialized tasks (e.g., inverter replacement, panel cleaning)
  • Manage the procurement of necessary equipment and spare parts for system maintenance.

7. Documentation & Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance.
  • Document any technical issues and solutions for future reference or improvement.

Requirements:

1. Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy or a related field.
  • Additional certifications in solar PV systems are preferred.

2. Experience:

  • Proven experience (2-5 years) in the operation and maintenance of solar energy systems or related fields.
  • Experience working with solar power plant equipment, inverters, battery storage systems, and monitoring software is highly valued.
  • Experience in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems.

3. Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of solar PV system design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with SCADA or other monitoring and control systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical faults, inverters, panels and other components.
  • Understanding of grid connectivity and the electrical codes and standards related to solar energy systems.

4. Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to detect issues before they cause significant problems.
  • Good communication skills for reporting to management and working with contractors and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

5. Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights and perform tasks that require physical exertion. (e.g; climbing ladders, accessing rooftop panels).

6. Other:

  • Valid driver's license (if travel to multiple sites is required)
  • Willingness to work on a rotating shift basis, including weekends and holidays, depending on the operational needs.
  • Familiarity with applicable laws and regulations related to renewable energy projects.

7. Certifications ( Preferred but not mandatory):

  • Certificate in PV system installation and maintenance.
  • First Aid/CPR certifications for safety on-site.
