Tasks & responsibilities

1. Assist in the day-to-day supervision of pharmacy technicians.
2. Screen incoming prescription.
3. Ensure that medication orders are entered accurately into the dispensing program and that the software is utilized properly
4. Fill up the prescription by ensuring medications are labelled correctly with the drug name, strength, quantity, usage directions, and patient information, while performing a second check on all issued medications.
5. Follow practice policies and procedures for dispensing medicines, particularly for high-cost and controlled substances.
6. Confirm that the correct medication and prescription are provided to the patient by verifying the details on the prescription and label, as well as the dosage instructions when necessary.
7. Deliver clear and understandable instructions to outpatients and discharged patients in a language they can comprehend and maintain accurate dispensing records.
8. Compound preparations as required by nursing units and prepare floor stocks according to nursing unit indents.
9. Comply with standard operating procedures for storage, recording and requisitions of medications.
10. Maintain minimum stock levels of medicines, checking expiry dates and storage conditions.
11. Maintain general cleanliness including dispensary and extemporaneous equipment ensuring it is clean, accurate and in a good state of repair.
12. Ensure the safe storage of returned and out-of-date medications.
13. Provide orientation and training of new Pharmacy staff.
14. Provide courteous and knowledgeable customer service to address inquiries and concerns regarding medications and pharmacy services.
15. Communicate effectively and regularly with other members of the dispensing team to ensure the accurate exchange of information relating to patients and their medication.
16. Prepare monthly departmental reports as required by the pharmacist.
