Job description
A 'Deli Clerk' is responsible for providing excellent customer service while preparing and serving deli products such as meats, cheeses, salads, and other specialty items. They ensure that the deli department is clean, well-stocked, and organized, while maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene.
Job Summary:
The Deli Clerk is responsible for assisting customers in the deli department, slicing and preparing deli meats and cheeses, and ensuring a high level of customer service. The Deli Clerk also helps maintain the cleanliness and organization of the deli area, stocks products, and ensures that all food safety regulations are followed.
Key Responsibilities:
1) Customer Service:
- Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Answer customer questions about products, offer recommendations, and provide information on product ingredients, allergens, and preparation methods.
- Accurately take customer orders and ensure proper handling of special requests.
- Provide samples and promote deli products to encourage sales.
2) Food Preparation & Handling:
- Slice meats, cheeses, and other products using slicers or knives, ensuring correct portion sizes and meeting customer preferences.
- Prepare deli salads, sandwiches, wraps, and other items as requested.
- Maintain high standards of food quality and presentation.
- Ensure all products are properly labeled with prices and expiration dates.
3) Product Stocking & Organization:
- Stock and rotate deli products to ensure freshness and minimize waste.
- Maintain inventory of products and communicate stock levels to supervisors.
- Ensure that the deli section is clean, well-organized, and visually appealing.
4) Health & Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all food safety and sanitation guidelines, including proper handling, storage, and temperature control of products.
- Regularly clean deli equipment, work surfaces, and display cases.
- Follow safety protocols for the operation of deli equipment, such as slicers and grinders.
5) Team Collaboration:
- Work with other deli staff to ensure smooth department operations.
- Assist with opening or closing procedures, including cleaning and organizing the department.
Skills & Qualifications:
1) Customer Service Skills:
- Friendly, approachable, and professional attitude toward customers.
- Strong communication skills to explain products and answer questions.
2) Attention to Detail:
- Ability to follow specific instructions on portion sizes and food preparation.
- Accuracy in labeling and stocking products.
3) Physical Stamina:
- Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy items, and use deli equipment such as slicers and grinders.
4) Food Safety Knowledge:
- Familiarity with food safety regulations and sanitation practices.
- Ability to safely handle and store food products.
5) Experience (Preferred):
- Previous experience in a deli, grocery store, or food service environment is preferred but not required.
- Training on deli equipment operation may be provided.
