- Assist in handling animals during examinations and treatments to ensure safety for both the veterinarian and the animal.
- Provide compassionate care, ensuring animals are calm and comfortable during their stay at the clinic.
- Monitor animals recovering from surgery or treatments, including checking vital signs, wound care, and ensuring proper post-operative care.
Assisting in Medical Procedures:
- Prepare animals for surgery, including cleaning, shaving, and disinfecting the surgical site.
- Support veterinarians during examinations, diagnostic tests (such as X-rays or blood draws), and surgical procedures.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and other treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
Laboratory Work:
- Collect samples such as blood, urine, or tissue for testing and assist with basic laboratory procedures (e.g., centrifuging, preparing slides).
Equipment and Facility Maintenance:
- Clean and sterilize instruments and surgical tools after each procedure.
- Maintain cleanliness of the clinic, ensuring that examination rooms, kennels, and treatment areas are tidy and disinfected regularly.
- Assist in the maintenance and proper functioning of medical equipment.
Client Communication and Education:
- Communicate clearly with pet owners regarding their pet’s condition, post-treatment care, medication administration, and diet.
- Provide clear instructions on post-operative care or medication schedules.
- Answer client questions regarding basic pet care, feeding, and general health concerns.
Record Keeping and Administration:
- Update and maintain accurate patient records, including medical history, treatment plans, and vaccination schedules.
- Assist with the scheduling of appointments, filing medical records, and handling payment transactions when necessary.
- Follow clinic protocols to ensure smooth administrative and operational flow.
Inventory Management:
- Monitor and restock supplies, medications, and surgical materials as needed.
- Maintain inventory records and notify supervisors when supplies are low.
Emergency Response:
- Assist veterinarians during emergency treatments or critical care situations.
Continuous Learning and Development:
- Stay updated on the latest veterinary techniques, treatments, and best practices by attending trainings or seminars as required by the clinic.
- Participate in continuing education to improve skills and knowledge in animal care.
Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); additional certification in animal care or veterinary assistance is a plus.
- Experience working with animals, preferably in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.
- Ability to handle and restrain different animal species safely and compassionately.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations.
