Job Summary We are seeking an inspirational, highly motivated and experienced teacher for the role of Deputy Head of Science who is responsible for the teaching and learning of Science throughout the Secondary School. All students study our own, bespoke science curriculum at KS3 and then go on to study one, two or all three sciences at IGCSE and A Level, following the CIE curriculum. The successful candidate will be passionate about teaching and learning and be able to lead the physics department. The ability to offer another science subject to IGCSE would be an advantage. He/she will be expected to make good use of technology and other innovative resources in his/her teaching and to convey a real enthusiasm for the subject. Key Responsibilities To oversee and ensure a high standard of all teaching and learning in the science department; To co-chair regular meetings of the science department; To promote school-wide interest in science; focusing on I-DEA; To oversee the KS3, Coordinated iGCSE and possible alternative A Level pathways (BTEC or other) To develop the integration of students’ scientific knowledge, understanding and skills with other areas of KTJ’s curriculum; To ensure that all science units are reviewed annually and lead the periodic review of all Science curricula; To monitor the delivery of the curriculum from Form 1 to the Upper Sixth, offering support when necessary; To monitor the academic progress of students in science, ensuring that success is celebrated and that appropriate intervention is put in place; To work in conjunction with the Subject Leads for Biology, Physics and Chemistry to oversee the allocation of staff to science classes; To oversee the budget requests and spending throughout the science department; To coordinate the development of an annual science development plan; To advise parents of the contents of science curricula to be taught each term; To provide information to help students, and their parents, make choices regarding IGCSE and A level science subjects; To work with the Director of Sixth Form ensure students are well supported and prepared for university applications and admissions tests for the sciences; To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Secondary. Personal characteristics and skills In depth knowledge of the IGCSE syllabus & A Level; A reflective classroom practitioner, with a desire to continually improve teaching practice; An up-to-date knowledge and understanding of practices, trends and issues in science teaching and learning; A familiarity with, and sensitivity to, the diverse range of student learning needs; A strong team member, who actively builds and promotes trust and openness; An innovative leader with an enthusiastic, self-motivated, culturally sensitive and flexible approach; The ability to motivate, inspire and challenge both staff and students; Good communication skills, both verbal and written; Highly proficient in spoken and written English; Able to communicate in French or Korean language will be an added advantage; Good organisational and administrative skills; A good degree of ICT literacy; A growth mindset; A genuine interest in young people and their wellbeing; An affinity with the School’s boarding ethos and with the values of Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar.
