The Bosun is responsible for leading and supervising the deck crew to ensure safe and efficient deck operations. This includes maintenance, cargo handling, mooring operations, and rigging activities. The Bosun plays a key role in ensuring compliance with safety regulations, training of deckhands, and assisting in emergency response operations. Key Responsibilities: Deck Operations & Maintenance: - Supervise deck crew (ABs, OS, and deckhands) in daily operations. - Oversee the cleaning, painting, chipping, and maintenance of decks, hulls, and equipment. - Ensure proper handling, stowing, and securing of cargo. - Assist with launching and recovering lifeboats and rescue boats. - Maintain mooring lines, winches, and anchoring systems. Mooring & Lifting Operations: - Lead mooring, anchoring, and towing operations safely. - Oversee rigging, lifting, and crane operations following safety protocols. - Ensure correct use of slings, shackles, and lifting gear. - Coordinate with the Crane Operator and Chief Officer for deck logistics. Safety & Compliance: - Conduct Toolbox Talks (TBT) and risk assessments before tasks. - Ensure compliance with IMO, SOLAS, and ISM Code safety regulations. - Monitor Permit-to-Work (PTW) and Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures. - Participate in firefighting, abandon ship, and other emergency drills. Crew Supervision & Training: - Train and mentor deck crew in seamanship, safety procedures, and deck operations. - Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to vessel safety protocols. - Report crew performance and disciplinary issues to the Chief Officer.
