The Radio Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining communication systems onboard the vessel or offshore installation. This includes managing radio, satellite, and internal communication networks, ensuring constant contact with onshore operations, supply vessels, helicopters, and emergency services. The Radio Operator also plays a critical role in safety, emergency coordination, and compliance with maritime communication regulations. Key Responsibilities: Communication Operations: - Operate and maintain VHF, MF/HF, GMDSS, satellite, and internal communication systems. - Ensure continuous communication between the vessel, offshore platforms, helicopters, supply vessels, and onshore facilities. - Monitor and log all incoming and outgoing transmissions. - Maintain contact with rescue coordination centers (RCC) and emergency response teams when necessary. Safety & Emergency Coordination: - Act as the primary communication link in emergencies, including search and rescue (SAR) operations. - Monitor distress frequencies and emergency channels in compliance with GMDSS regulations. - Support emergency drills and coordinate communication for fire, medical, or evacuation emergencies. - Assist in activating emergency response plans (ERP) and mustering procedures. Regulatory Compliance & Record Keeping: - Ensure compliance with IMO, SOLAS, GMDSS, and local maritime authority regulations. - Maintain radio logs, call records, and official communication reports. - Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly checks of communication equipment to ensure operational readiness. - Assist in updating navigational warnings, weather forecasts, and security alerts. Helicopter & Vessel Coordination: - Coordinate and track helicopter movements, ensuring clear communication with pilots and offshore teams. - Maintain accurate records of passenger manifests, flight schedules, and cargo transfers. - Assist in logistics planning for supply vessels, personnel transfers, and bunkering operations. Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting: - Monitor the functionality of radios, antennas, EPIRBs, SARTs, and AIS systems. - Report technical faults and assist in troubleshooting communication equipment. - Ensure battery backups and emergency power supplies for radio equipment are operational.
