The 3rd Engineer assists in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the vessel’s engineering systems, including main and auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, and hydraulic systems. Working under the guidance of the Chief and 2nd Engineer, the 3rd Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the engine room operates efficiently and safely, complying with all maritime regulations and company policies. Key Responsibilities: Engineering Operations & Maintenance: - Assist in the daily operation of main engines, generators, thrusters, and auxiliary equipment. - Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on engine room machinery. - Monitor fuel, lubricants, cooling water, and hydraulic systems to ensure proper performance. - Support troubleshooting and repairs of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures. - Ensure proper logging and record-keeping of machinery operations and maintenance tasks. Safety & Compliance: - Ensure compliance with IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, and Class regulations. - Assist in conducting engine room drills, safety inspections, and risk assessments. - Follow permit-to-work (PTW) procedures for maintenance and repairs. - Participate in emergency response teams for engine room incidents such as fires or fuel leaks. Technical Support & Teamwork: - Work closely with the Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, and Electrical Officers to maintain smooth engine room operations. - Assist in bunkering operations, ensuring proper fuel transfer procedures are followed. - Provide support in major repairs and overhauls under the supervision of senior engineers. Training & Development: - Learn and develop skills in marine engineering systems and troubleshooting techniques. - Assist in the training of junior engine ratings and ensure compliance with safety protocols. - Continuously update knowledge of new technologies and regulatory changes in the maritime industry.
