ABOUT SDSN

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning and promote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world.

SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society. It is directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in New York, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.


POSITION SUMMARY

The SDSN is seeking a dynamic, talented and experienced individual to help advance the work in education policy and transformation, as a key enabler of sustainable development, with a particular focus on countries in Asia, especially Southeast Asia. This role provides the unique opportunity to build connections and engage with education stakeholders as well as experts in the field of education transformation; and to explore innovative, research-backed solutions to ensure that countries are supported to achieve SDG 4.7 and its far-reaching ramifications. Based out of our Malaysia office of the SDSN, the Manager will report to the Director of Education Studies and work closely with the SDSN team. The position requires some domestic and international travel (not to exceed 15% of time).

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in research projects being undertaken at SDSN, primarily but not limited to the Education Policy and Transformation under Mission 4.7
  • Develop evidence-based and locally relevant interventions as an outcome of research
  • Pilot and/ or implement intervention projects, including but not limited to educator capacity-building
  • Track the impact, through appropriate monitoring and evaluation tools, of solutions initiatives that arise out of SDSN for outreach to relevant parties
  • Write reports, journal articles, op-ed articles, and other outreach material; as an outcome of research and intervention projects
  • Support the Malaysia Education for Sustainable Development unit of SDSN, including exploring new opportunities for partnership, as well as managing coordinating with existing partners and stakeholders including government agencies, CSOs, academia, industry and funders
  • Manage and support SDSN’s relationship with international educational partner organizations including relevant UN agencies, and develop multi-sectoral partnerships that will result in impactful collaborative initiatives
  • Support communications, branding, and outreach for SDSN and Mission 4.7 in Asia
  • Supervise, plan, organize and execute events of SDSN including seminars, workshops, conferences, forums, talks, roadshows, and meetings
  • Basic administrative tasks, as mandated by a small team
  • Other duties that may be assigned by the management from time to time

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in sustainable development, education, economics, social sciences, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Professional fluency in English required; fluency in additional languages advantageous
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills in English required
  • Experience and/or interest in education and/or sustainable development preferred
  • Adept at learning and navigating new technologies quickly
  • Strong record of project management, time-management and flexibility to respond to changing priorities in fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to manage partnerships and client relationships at senior level
  • Committed to cross-cultural engagement; experience working in an international environment and willingness to work across time zones
  • Highly self-motivated, self-directed, and attentive to detail
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and in a team, often with demanding deadlines
  • Proactive and willing to take initiative; leadership skills preferred
  • Passion for the mission of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network
  • Must have the right to work in Malaysia
