The Safety and Health Officer (SHO) is responsible for overseeing and ensuring workplace safety, health, and compliance with relevant laws, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 1994) and the Factories and Machinery Act 1967. Key Responsibilities:

  • Recommending safety improvements, equipment, and controls for risk mitigation.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To work as a Safety and Health Officer in Malaysia, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  • A diploma or degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of a Safety and Health Officer course accredited by DOSH. The course is mandatory for individuals seeking to be a registered SHO in Malaysia.
  • The SHO certification should be issued by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), which is the regulating authority in Malaysia.
  • Practical work experience in occupational safety and health, ideally with a background in high-risk industries (e.g., construction, manufacturing, or oil and gas).
  • Once the necessary educational qualifications and certifications are obtained, the individual must register with DOSH to be officially recognized as a Safety and Health Officer.
  • Good knowledge of the OSHA 1994 and other regulations related to workplace safety in Malaysia.
  • Strong communication skills for training and awareness programs.
  • Analytical skills for identifying safety issues and developing solutions.
