The position of Associate Engineer provides high quality design and engineering knowledge and effective project management skills to support the ongoing activities of a leading multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy and to provide the complete analysis and design tasks as assigned by Managers or Project Managers, assisting in directing several professional and other groups engaged in inter-related Engineering responsibilities.

Job Description

  • Providing expert advice and demonstrating advanced technical skills, ensuring that analysis and design tasks undertaken meet appropriate technical standards and the requirements of the client and SMEC;
  • Proactively collaborating with appropriate team members, contributors and stakeholders to maintain quality, timeliness and co-ordination of project deliverables;
  • Actively contribute to the commercial success of projects and the team.
  • Apply project management principles in carrying out assigned tasks and accomplish project deliverables to the required standard and in a timely manner.
  • Applying a deeper understanding of engineering principles to devise and deliver practical and economical solutions to problems;
  • Ensuring that all tasks are undertaken in accordance with SMEC’s Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ);
  • Producing reports on innovative outcomes to a high intellectual standard;
  • Providing advice where the concept proposal has nonstandard engineering requirements;
  • Responsible for the accuracy and correctness of calculations prepared for design;
  • Supervising the review of complex design to ensure the clients requirements have been met and recommend improvements and corrections;
  • Supervision of drawing production for assigned tasks is undertaken in accordance with SMEC procedures as appropriate;
  • Supporting other streams in the delivery of high standard designs, verification and onsite supervision;
  • Undertaking calculations in accordance with the project requirements (i.e. calculation packages to include Design Statement, table of contents, etc.);
  • Undertaking design to a high standard and tight timeframes;
  • Writing complex reports and undertaking peer reviews.
  • Being an active participant in project and team meetings;
  • Communicating openly and regularly with the appropriate contributors and stakeholders;
  • Encouraging and assisting others to build strong internal and external networks and relationships;
  • Ensuring that company objectives, policies and procedures are adhered to by coordinating the establishment of discipline-specific practices;
  • Forming alliances with appropriate professionals and specialists within the organization to achieve agreed outcomes and develop broader knowledge;
  • Informal supervision, mentoring and coaching of more junior staff;
  • Proactively liaising with other design disciplines to develop and maintain design co-ordination;
  • Proactively sharing knowledge to provide technical support and mentoring;
  • Providing significant informal supervision, leadership, mentoring and coaching of more junior staff;
  • Planning and managing small, medium and large scale projects. This will include coordinating the preparation of: cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports and monitoring project progress, project scheduling/resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets
  • Adhering to the document management process
  • Assisting in managing the work financially, technically and contractually
  • Developing and adapting relevant techniques and processes and providing senior technical input in projects at critical stages
  • Directing the schedule of design tasks to ensure that agreed outcomes and cost structures are met
  • Driving Quality Assurance
  • Independently identifying programs and problems to be investigated
  • Liaising with project managers and appropriate stakeholders to ascertain information required to undertake design and documentation tasks.
