Purpose of Job
This position will be part of a highly dynamic team working on various complex tasks. The primary purpose of a GIS Officer working on MyIMCA would be to provide the technical support necessary to identify, monitor, and manage important coastal and marine areas. This job would involve using GIS tools and methods to gather, analyze, and present spatial information related to the condition of these ecosystems and their use by local communities and industries. The candidate must integrate and collaborate with other thematic areas of the Marine Programme in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate experience in environmental science, competency with GIS extensions, and the ability to perform overlay and spatial analyses. The most suitable candidate would also be expected to possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in mapping applications. Strong communication skills are required to approach local government units. The candidate must also be able to independently prioritize and perform multiple tasks under strict deadlines and work with various staff teams to help achieve the programme's strategic vision.
Key Outputs
1. Performing spatial analysis and producing high-quality maps and reports for internal and external stakeholders
2. Perform spatial analysis to support planning and decision-making
3. Marine GIS Database System is established and managed to ensure data quality, accuracy, completeness, and consistency, and regularly updated
4. Produce storymaps and dashboard by using ArcGIS Online for the Marine Programme
Major Activities
1. MyIMCA storymap and dashboard development partnering with MSMS
2. Analyzing spatial data through mapping software (ArcGIS) and designing digital maps with geographic data and various other data sets
3. He/she will review activity deliverables and work with the supervisor and programme leader, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure deliverables meet programme objectives
4. Work with project teams to integrate GIS data into project planning and execution. Provide GIS support across multiple projects, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of GIS outputs
5. Conducting field surveys and data collection activities to validate and
supplement GIS information for improved accuracy
Specifications
1. A bachelor’s degree from a university with a specialization in an appropriate field of geography or environmental science and experience of at least three (3) years in conservation Geographic information System (GIS)
2. Proven experience in GIS or a related field, with strong proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS). Experience with ArcGIS Online mapping is an advantage
3. Familiarity with spatial databases and data management
4. Excellent written and oral skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely
6. Having organizing and management skills would be preferred
7. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
8. Must be able to work in the field with minimal supervision
Working Relationships
1. To develop a close professional working relationship with the Senior GIS Officer (Marine Programme) to whom you will be reporting, respectively, on all related matters and maintain a good relationship.
2. In the absence of your supervisor, you should consult the Marine Programme Leader, other Pillar Leads and, ultimately, the Conservation Director.
3. Nurture and maintain positive relationships with external parties, including Malaysian NGOs and government agencies, with conservation objectives and goals similar or complementary to WWF-Malaysia's.
4. Participate in regular technical coordination meetings with the Marine Habitat and Species Manager. In the Manager's absence, the Conservation Director will appoint an alternate representative to participate in the monthly meetings.
