Position: Nurse Manager Operating Room

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Ensure the smooth running of the OR, CSSD and Ambulatory Daycare.

2. Establish, control and monitor a safe perioperative environment (e. technical and aseptic practice, electrical safety, physical facilities, occupational safety).

3. Comply and provide direction with hospital and departmental policies, procedures and assignments concerning safety, infection control and equipment.

4. Interpret and implement the scope and standards of perioperative nursing practice.

5. Supervise and direct the coordination of perioperative care among the surgical team.

6. Assume responsibility for the monitoring and evaluation processes within the OR department.

• Conduct meeting /briefing to staff to ensure smooth running of the assigned unit.

• Ensure adequate staffing for the units.

• Plan work assignments and schedules.

• Arrange and recommend vacation schedules for the staff.

• Counsel staff on personal and work problems.

• Guide the staff in solving complaints concerning patient's relatives, medical and other staffs.

7. Adopt a system of documentation of patient care and forms.

8. Develop and review standard operating procedures to guide perioperative services such as;

• Correct site/side and identity

• Safe medication administration

• Specimen labelling

• Sponge, sharp and instrument counts and Positioning

• Surgical attire and surgical hand-washing

9. Assist in the assessment of staffing needs and selection of appropriate staffs by consultation and interview.

10. Develop and implement programs for the orientation of new staff.

11. Instruct, observe and document job performance of new staff in a timely manner.

12. Assess and provide continuing education needs and requirements of staff relevant to technological developments, changing licensure requirements, standards of practice and revisions in policies and procedures.

13. Collaborate with the Clinical Educator and Chief of Nursing Services to ensure the continued skill development of staff relating to service-specific needs are addressed. Maintains knowledge of current trends in standards of care and health care management.

14. Collaborate with the relevant medical staff to meet identified educational and developmental needs of staffs in OR/CSSD/Ambulatory Daycare.

15. Maintain education records to include license and certification documentation.

16. Ensure that credentialing relating to procedures, equipment, and supplies are provided to appropriate staff.

17. Ensure adequate communication inter/intra-departmental and with administrative and medical staff.

18. Conduct meeting /briefing to staff to ensure smooth running of the assigned units.

19. Participate in various performance improvement activities to improve patient care.

20. Guide and assist Endoscopy staffs in care, cleaning, decontamination, maintenance, handling, storage and sterilisation and/or disinfection of endoscopes and related accessories.

21. Ensure items to be sterilised are decontaminated, packaged, sterilised and transported in a controlled environment at the CSSD.

22.Practise infection control guidelines.

23. Maintain and update inventory and ensure there is a planned preventive maintenance of biomedical devices and equipment.

24. Monitor the equipment efficiency and utilization. Monitor and adjust work and equipment assignment to facilitate optimum resource utilization.

25.Oversee surgical equipment during repairs and arrange for usage of substitution equipment as needed.

26.Research and assess the need for new equipment and materials and make appropriate recommendations to management and coordinate with vendors trial and evaluation of proposed purchases.

27.Evaluate the effectiveness of surgeons preference for materials and supplies and recommend appropriate acquisitions.

28.Take appropriate action of incidents and develop plan of action.

29.Assist the Chief of Nursing Services/ in the investigation of incident reporting, suspected infections and patient/ doctor complaints and resolved problems or makes recommendation for action.

Identify, communicate, and when appropriate, resolve problems, and develop courses of action in a timely manner.

30.Collect and trend data and provide analysis reports.

31.Carry out environmental audit for OR, CSSD and Ambulatory Daycare.

32. Be a member of the Disaster Plan Team. Participate actively and fully committed in activities of the QA, Infection Control, Fire and Safety program.

33. Perform any other duties as assigned/requested.

Education and Requirements:

  • State Registered Nurse with at least 5-10 years of OR experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years at Supervisory level.
  • Post-basic certificate in perioperative nursing.
  • Degree in nursing is an added advantage.
