Midwife Requirements:

. Possess Bachelor/ Diploma in Midwifery

· Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia approved Registered Nurse (RN).

· 1-3 years of experience as MW with post basic in Midwifery - compulsory

. 1 to 2 yrs in O&G / Neonatology

Midwife Nursing Skills and Competency Responsibilities:

· Exceptional knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment, as well as sterile techniques.

· Proficiency in record keeping and patient management system.

· Advanced proficiency in developing and implementing preoperative nursing care plans.

· Ability to collaborate with surgical teams and healthcare specialists.

· Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

Midwife Nursing Skills and Competency Required:

MW ensures that the care is sensitive to individual women’s cultures and preferences. Able to use appropriate clinical and technical means to monitor the condition of mother and fetus by providing proper pain management and compassionate care.

· Midwives have the requisite knowledge and skills from obstetrics, neonatology, and ethics that form the basis of high-quality, culturally relevant appropriate care for women, newborns, and childbearing mothers.

· Able to deliver core competency by comprehensive nursing, including response-ability, communication ability, site control ability, and critical thinking.

· Able to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate. Assessment is the first step and involves critical thinking skills for the safe delivery of patients.

· IPSG # 1. Identify the patient using two identifications that require an active response - e.g. “What is your name, date of birth, or identity card number? “

· Able to identify high-risk pregnancies and able to perform CTG, interpret CTG graphs, and monitor contractions while the mother is in the progress of labor.

· Familiar with all medication used in O&G especially when complications arise or for post-date baby.

· Monitor pregnant women and support husbands during the labor and birthing process.

· Teach new and expectant mothers how to feed, care for, and bathe their babies.

· When LSCS is indicated, able to prepare the patient with a pre-op checklist is carried out before the patient is taken to the Operating Theatre.

· Ensure the informed consent form for the operation is signed by the patient and witnessed by the Anesthetist.

· Informed Consent form for O&G – Patient agreement to investigation or treatment is signed before surgery. Routine form used for O&G cases in QHC.

· Expert knowledge of obstetric emergencies.

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure where there is a limitation of manpower. May be called in after working hours to assist in emergency cases.

· Good written and verbal communication skills among the medical team and patients and their families.

· Exceptional multitasking skills and time management skills.

· Effective documentation and ability to write patient’s report post-delivery.

· Must have good knowledge of infectious diseases and management of isolation and Infection Prevention Control.

· Reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Notification of infectious diseases, knowledge of Clinical Waste Disposal, etc.

· Assist in administering IV medication as instructed by the O&G and anesthetist in OT.

· Assist in setting Branula to start intravenous lines and carry out all O&G and anesthetist orders.

· MW assists doctors during procedures and monitors patient vital signs.

· Good interpersonal skills and a good rapport with patients, their families, and OT Team, and all healthcare members in the hospital.

· Help transfer post-delivery patients to the ward for monitoring and observation.

· Knowledge of Management of needle / sharp injury, how to handle needle stick injuries, and raise incident reports for any abnormal incidents.

· MW needs an extensive set of hard skills and soft skills, including knowledge of emergency medication.

· MW assists and communicates with patients about their treatment plan and gives health education after birth to discuss the recovery process.

· Promoting adequate discharge planning and health education on breastfeeding and care of newborns before discharge.

· Willingness to continually learn the latest advancements and treatments in the Labour Room.
