The Steward is responsible for ensuring cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of all kitchen and service areas within the convention centre. This role plays a crucial part in maintaining the high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and overall operational efficiency in a busy event and catering environment.
THE JOBSCOPE
- Clean and sanitize all kitchen equipment, utensils, dishes, glassware, and silverware.
- Ensure the dishwashing area is organized, ensuring the smooth flow of clean and dirty items.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary environment in the kitchen, storage, and service areas, in line with health and safety regulations.
- Regularly clean kitchen floors, walls, and workstations to maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the day.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling according to set procedures to maintain a tidy environment.
- Properly maintain and care for kitchen equipment, ensuring items are in good working condition.
- Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment to management for repair or replacement.
- Follow proper safety protocols when handling cleaning chemicals and equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
- Help set up and prepare service areas before events, ensuring that all necessary utensils, plates, and glasses are available and clean.
- Follow proper hygiene practices, including regular hand washing and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work closely with chefs, kitchen staff, and event teams to ensure smooth operations during events.
- Assist with the delivery of clean dishes, utensils, and service items to event spaces or banquet halls.
- Maintain a positive attitude and strong teamwork, ensuring that all staff work together to meet event needs and standards.
- Assist in the inventory control of kitchen supplies, including dishwashing detergents, cleaning supplies, and kitchen utensils.
- Ensure that all items are stored properly and regularly check stock levels for reordering.
REQUIREMENTS
- Previous experience in a stewarding or kitchen support role in a hotel, restaurant, or convention centre is a plus but not required.
- Basic knowledge of kitchen cleaning procedures and food safety standards.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy items (up to 25 lbs) and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods. Ability to handle repetitive tasks in a physically demanding environment.
