Senior Legal Counsel

Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our legal team, specializing in oil & gas and/or the construction industry. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of contract laws, construction law, compliance, contract management, risk mitigation, and dispute resolution. This role involves providing strategic legal guidance on a wide range of construction projects, overseeing contractual negotiations, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, and representing the company in legal matters related to construction.

Key Responsibilities:

• Legal Advisory & Strategy: Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance to senior management, project teams, and business units regarding oil & gas, construction related projects, contracts, and related legal matters.
• Contract Drafting & Negotiation: Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of various commercial contracts, including EPCC contracts, commercial loan agreements, general contractor agreements, subcontracts, joint venture agreements, and supply of goods and services contracts.
• Dispute Resolution: Manage and resolve disputes related to oil, gas and/or construction projects, including claims, delays, cost overruns, and other construction-related conflicts. Represent the company in arbitration, mediation, and litigation as required.
• Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks associated with construction projects. Advise on compliance with industry regulations, zoning laws, environmental laws, and safety standards.
• Compliance Management: Ensure the company’s operations, projects, and contracts comply with applicable local, national, and international regulations and industry standards, including environmental, health and safety, labor, and building codes.
• Regulatory Compliance: Oversee regulatory compliance for construction projects, advising on permits, certifications, and legal requirements related to construction practices. Monitor changes in construction law and ensure the company adapts accordingly.
• Training & Development: Provide training and development to internal stakeholders on legal and compliance issues related to contract and construction law and regulatory obligations.
• Project Support: Collaborate closely with project managers and teams to ensure that all legal aspects of contracts and projects are handled efficiently and in accordance with the law.
• Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of legal and compliance matters, and advise on reporting obligations as required by regulatory bodies or stakeholders.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Education: LL.B and Admission to the Malaysian Bar or other Commonwealth jurisdictions.
• Experience: At least 5 years of legal experience in a top tier law firm and in-house legal department, with a strong focus on oil & gas contracts and legal advisory work, construction law, compliance, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial contracts.
• Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of construction law, including contract law, insurance, bonding, construction regulations, compliance requirements, and dispute resolution methods (arbitration, mediation, and litigation).
