1. Shipboard Operations - Act as a Safety Officer onboard as appointed by the company that ensures safe working conditions are maintained in all working areas including access to the ship - Familiarize himself with ship’s cargo gears and give necessary training and instructions to the crew on its proper use - Ensures cargoes are loaded or discharged as per Master’s instructions 2. Repairs and Maintenance - In charge of maintenance and up keep of the hull and deck equipment -Ensures all rotating parts of windlass, winches, crane, fast rescue craft davit, blocks, roller leads, etc are regularly oiled and greased 3. Supervision of Personnel - Plans and schedule work of deck department personnel - Briefs new crew members about their duties and responsibilities and ensure they are well versed with shipboard operations and with safety aspects and pollution prevention regulations 4. Sanitation and Health - Inspect mess rooms, galley, pantries, storerooms, passageways, bathrooms, and sanitary facilities regularly and ensures these are kept clean at all times - Ensures all deck personnel are provided with the required personal protective equipment 5. Pollution Prevention - Ensures that pollution control equipment are adequate and ready for use at all times - Supervises garbage disposals by all ship personnel and complete the garbage record book entries in good time
