Job Purpose:
The Language Support Teacher will work with students who are either learning English as an additional language or have specific language learning difficulties. This teacher will provide tailored support to help these students overcome language barriers, enhance their academic performance, and build confidence in their communication skills. The role involves working closely with classroom teachers, parents, and other support staff to create individualized learning plans that cater to each student's specific needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Language Support: Provide individual and small group language instruction to support students who have English as an additional language (EAL) or experience language learning difficulties.
- Assessment: Assess the language proficiency and needs of students, including both EAL students and those with language difficulties, to create personalized learning plans.
- Differentiation: Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate students’ varying language levels and learning styles, ensuring effective learning for all.
- Collaboration: Work closely with classroom teachers to ensure that language needs are being met within the mainstream curriculum. Offer strategies to teachers for differentiation in their lessons.
- Monitoring Progress: Regularly track and report on the progress of students, providing feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- Resources: Develop and use appropriate learning resources and materials that support language development and address students’ specific challenges.
- Inclusion: Promote an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, confident, and able to succeed.
- Professional Development: Stay informed of best practices in language acquisition and special education needs, and participate in professional development opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
- Teaching certification (for the relevant country/region) and specific qualifications in language support or special education would be beneficial.
Experience:
- Proven experience working with primary and secondary students who have English as an additional language or language learning difficulties.
- Experience in differentiation and adapting lessons for diverse learners, including those with special educational needs.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of language acquisition processes, both for EAL students and those with specific language learning difficulties.
- Ability to create engaging and inclusive lesson plans tailored to students' individual needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping students achieve their full potential.
