Position Overview

The main purpose of this position is to deliver conceptual and detailed design for Secondary Protection and Control Engineering for AIS and GIS substation projects in the UK.

You will be working with our team members, managers, client project manager and responsible for delivery of Engineering and Design services during the proposal, engineering and construction stages of projects. Our project contract expands from medium-voltage and high-voltage substation projects, both Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation, Rail, Infrastructure, Data Centre, Solar Park, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Wind Offshore & Onshore Substation, including but not limited to 11- 400kV.

This position requires the ability to clearly and effectively communicate in order to successfully collaborate, coordinate, and resolve project design related activities and issues. Problems involve recognizing situations and applying appropriate concepts to solve problems that are usually short-term in nature. Good conversation and writing skills as well as normal tact and courtesy are required.

Essential Skills and Experience (Protection Design Engineer)

  • Protection Logics and Interlock diagram.
  • Preparation of Protection Single Line Diagrams, AC & DC schematic, cable schedule, core sheet, wiring diagram, specifications and BoMs for the substation design packages developed by third party or OEM engineering in coordination with other disciplines.
  • Good knowledge in Substation protection system and design philosophy e.g. Distance Protection, Differential Protection (High Impedance and Low Impedance), REF Protection and O/C & E/F Protections etc.
  • Design calculations e.g. CT & VT sizing etc.
  • Auxiliary Power System design like Low Voltage AC Panel & DC Panel requirements.
  • Interface design engineering e.g. switchgear and auxiliary systems.
  • Knowledge of mimic diagram, alarm system, metering system, etc.
  • Ability to produce (IED) protection and control device settings and configuration files
  • Ability to operate the vendor specific software tools for modern substation automation and protection equipment (e.g., MiCOM Studio, DIGSI, etc.)
  • Good knowledge in communication architecture for the substation automation, tele-protection and understanding of RTU/SCADA design.
  • Take part in customer meetings for design reviews and tender/project clarifications.
  • Applies standard techniques and procedures to perform Control and Protection engineering assignments.
  • Prepare, update, and support the project execution engineering activities in the schedule with emphasis on; On-time delivery and Quality of deliverables.
  • Adhere to the company's quality processes and document control procedures to ensure design documents are complete and accurate.
  • Notify the Senior Team or the Client Project Manager of any difficulties encountered in the engineering and design that may adversely impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule of the project deliverables, and provide recommendations for solutions.
  • Responsible for obtaining customer approvals for the designs and drawings.
  • Identifying and clarifying technical ambiguities and conflicts in the documents

Essential Skills

  • Extensive experience in Auto CAD and proficient in 2-D CAD drafting
  • Extensive experience in MS Office packages e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • A high level of competency in written and spoken English
  • Sensitive to agreed delivery programme, quality and budget

Other Requirements

Knowledge on the following will be an advantage:

  • Review and preparation of detailed design drawings (Plan, Layout, Electrical Clearance, Earthing, Connectors, etc.) and BoMs for the substation design packages.
  • Knowledge in Substation HV system and design philosophy e.g., bay arrangements and configuration, AIS, GIS, electrical clearances, etc.
  • Engineering design calculations (busbar forces, earthing, plant equipment sizing)
  • 3D REVIT, BIM Modelling
  • Experience in Auto CADRaster, Microstation, Elecdes, ELCAD
  • Modbus, IEC 101, IEC 104, IEC 61850 substation network communication standards
