The opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity to join Trowers & Hamlins' international banking & finance practice in our Kuala Lumpur office.

Our Kuala Lumpur office is home to a growing team of Malaysian and international lawyers, in a multidisciplinary practice which supports Malaysian and ASEAN clients effectively to execute international cross-border investment, M&A and financing transactions across a range of sectors including real estate, hospitality, oil and gas, energy and infrastructure, utilising either conventional or Shari'ah compliant structures.

We have a significant reputation for advising in the field of Islamic finance (Tier One in Legal 500 2019) and a large part of our work involves helping businesses, families and institutions participate in global investment opportunities on a Shari'ah compliant basis.

What you will be doing

  • Dealing with a range of banking and finance and capital markets matters of varying sizes and complexity
  • Managing due diligence processes and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
  • Reviewing corporate documents and commercial contracts and working closely with the corporate team to provide general corporate and companies law advice related to banking and capital markets matters
  • Corporate lending, debt capital markets, regulatory and restructuring work
  • Initiating, building and maintaining effective client relationships
  • Pro-active involvement in marketing initiatives
  • Working across a variety of banking and capital markets specialisms.
  • Contributing effectively to department and firm wide performance goals.

What you will need

The firm has a Career Development Framework which sets out the competencies we expect of those at this grade. In particular for this role, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Between 2 to 3 years' post qualification experience gained at a reputable Malaysian firm;
  • Experience of a good mix of cross border banking and finance work (particularly advising on transactions utilising LMA/APLMA style documents) and debt capital markets work;
  • Islamic finance experience is an advantage (but not essential);
  • Proven ability to take on responsibility and manage files;
  • Flexibility, positivity and an ability to work effectively in a close-knit office;
  • an interest in, and an aptitude for, developing the firm’s business and a willingness to assist in the development of client relationships, through meetings, presentations, producing know-how and other business development initiatives;
  • an excellent spoken and written English skills (additional languages a plus); and
  • an Excellent academic record
