Overview

In this role you will be responsible for the production of innovative, appropriate, cost-effective, designs, drawings, and specifications in mechanical engineering for assigned projects. You will oversee the work performed by the staff assigned the project, and the mechanical project budget/time management.

Responsibilities

Application of Knowledge of Building Systems (Conceptual Design)

  • Works with Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer to ensure understanding and compliance with owner’s building program requirements and facility or corporate standards related to mechanical and plumbing systems design.
  • Learns to confirm and review applicable codes and standards such as but not limited to the Malaysia and International Building Code Council (Mechanical, Plumbing, Gas, Fire), ASHRAE Standards (90.1, 62 and 15) and NFPA.
  • Given the scope of design services, the owner’s building program and facility standards, building code research and relevant industry standards, works with the Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer to establish and document the mechanical and plumbing systems basis of design and in doing so provide clarification, qualifications and design assumptions regarding relevant design issues.
  • Assist Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer and works with building/facility owner to ensure that the appropriate cost-effective systems/products are utilized in their facility.
  • Assist Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer and works with building owner and construction management team to validate construction cost and provide value engineering options as may be necessary.
  • Knows when to obtain support from the Lead Mechanical Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer for assistance to determine engineering and design building requirements.
  • Design

  • Knows BIM and AutoCAD design software, and incorporate designs into project documents/models.
  • Proficiency in how to establish the building envelope thermal insulation values for the purpose of energy code compliance and cooling/heating load calculations and runs energy compliance software.
  • Learning how to run cooling/heating load calculations.
  • Learning how to select and schedule mechanical equipment.
  • Learning how to design, layout and sizing, of air distribution systems and related equipment.
  • Learning how to design, layout and sizing, of chilled and condenser water systems and related equipment.
  • Learning how to design, layout and sizing, of steam and associated condensate systems and related equipment.
  • Working towards proficiency in the development of control drawings, schematic diagrams, points list and sequence of operation.
  • Proficient in the creation of a complete and accurate set of constructions documents including
  • cover sheet, floor plans, details and sections, equipment schedules and control drawing
  • Level II Additional Responsibilities

  • To reach level II for this position design responsibilities c-h should be executed proficiently.
  • Construction Support: Does Field inspections with the Lead Mechanical Engineer and/or Senior Mechanical Engineer.
  • Project Management: Assists in monitoring the work performed by the other project staff.
  • Monitors the work performed by the other project staff.
  • Planning, Scheduling and Profitability:
  • Assists in compiling a complete design package issue (pricing documents, SD, DD, and CD).
  • Works with project’s Lead Mechanical Engineer and/or Senior Mechanical Engineer to ensure that the project schedule will be met, and complete documents are provided for each submission.
  • Designs project within provided design budget and track additional hours utilized, including when scope is expanded.
  • Professional Development: Proactively attempts to receive in-house/out-of-house training to create design skills.
  • Leadership:
  • Works as part of the larger team, and not as an independent island.
  • Is flexible and willing to quickly move between projects as needed to assist in meeting project schedules
  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering, recognized by BEM
    • 3-5 years experience

    Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications Etc.

  • Proficient in design and management of HVAC & R, Fire Protection, Plumbing and Mechanical Building Services
  • Strong working knowledge in BIM software for design and engineering works, including AutoDesk software (AutoCad, Revit).
  • Familiar with mechanical system design codes (Malaysia standard, NFPA, ASHRAE90.1, 62.1, ASME B31.1, etc.)
  • Ability to coordinate with different disciplines in a project.
  • Experience in collaboration with international firms a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
