Chief Officer generally assists Master in the daily vessel operations to the standard lay down by the company SMS, Statutory Regulations and Chatterer’s requirements. Report to the Shipmaster. Assume the command of the vessel in the event of Master incapacitated. Chief Officer is a designated Ship Safety Officer onboard. Duties and Responsibilities: • Head of deck department and Master’s deputy. • Safety Officer where he is responsible for PPE allocation and management, Safety briefings, JHA application, Incident Reporting and management crew health welfare. • Cargo operations (if any). • Liaising with shore authorities and ensuring awareness of S.M.S. • Ensuring deck crew follow safe working practices as defined in Company procedures or publication. • Identifying potential ship hazards associated with deck operations and advising the Master accordingly. • Instructing junior officers/ratings on relevant procedures. • Stability and related calculations for cargo and ballasting (if any). • Notifying the Master immediately of any defects, which may affect ship safety or put at risk the marine environment. • Assigning deck officers or ratings specific roles with respect to the deck department responsibilities as defined in the safety management system. • Investigating non-conformance’s and applying corrective action as agreed with the Master. • Any other duties required by the master necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. • Inform Office at least 30 days in advance of expiration of any certification. • To oversee and assign duties to deck crew in line with company’s PMS system.
