Medical Assistant

A medical assistant's job is to support the doctor and other health care team members by performing a variety of administrative and clinical tasks: 1. Patient care Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiratory rate Prepare patients for exams by obtaining their information and educating them on clinical procedures Assist doctors or nurses with patient exams or surgery Give patients injections or draw blood as permitted by state law Administer medications as directed by a physician 2. Administrative tasks Schedule appointments and call patients with reminders Manage medical records Update medical records with information about why the patient is visiting Handle billing and insurance Code information for insurance purposes 3. 3. Other tasks Set up and monitor EKGs Sterilize instruments and patient rooms Dispose of contaminated supplies Instruct patients about medications
