Job Overview:
As a Commis Chef at The Industry, you will play a vital role in assisting the kitchen team with food preparation, ensuring the highest standards of quality and hygiene. Depending on your experience and skill level, you will be assigned to different kitchen stations, supporting the culinary team in delivering exceptional dining experiences for guests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Food Preparation & Cooking:
  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of ingredients and dishes, ensuring consistency and quality according to recipe specifications.
  • Follow all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines.
  • Prepare garnishes, sauces, and other components needed for dishes.
  • Support the chef de partie or senior chefs in daily kitchen tasks and service.
  • Assist in the mise en place (preparation of ingredients) for the day’s service.
  • Kitchen Station Management:
  • Manage your designated station during service, ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow.
  • Ensure that food is prepared and cooked to the correct temperature and presentation standards.
  • Monitor food storage, stock levels, and quality of ingredients, reporting any issues to senior kitchen staff.
  • Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment, tools, and work areas.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work closely with other members of the kitchen team to ensure that orders are processed efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with other chefs, waitstaff, and management regarding orders, ingredients, and kitchen issues.
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Quality Control & Consistency:
  • Assist in ensuring the consistency of dishes, both in terms of taste and presentation.
  • Take direction from senior chefs to refine your culinary skills and gain experience.
  • Taste and check food items for flavor, seasoning, and presentation before they leave the kitchen.
  • Health & Safety:
  • Follow all food safety standards, including safe food handling, temperature controls, and personal hygiene.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation, adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Report any maintenance issues with equipment or kitchen tools to the head chef.
  • Learning & Development:
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to improve your skills.
  • Assist in the training of junior kitchen staff, if applicable.
  • Take responsibility for your own learning and growth within the kitchen environment.

Qualifications:

  • Commis 1: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a professional kitchen. Strong knowledge of cooking techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Commis 2: Some experience in a kitchen environment is required, or a formal culinary qualification. Willingness to learn and grow.
  • Commis 3: Entry-level position. Basic knowledge of food preparation and an eagerness to develop culinary skills.
  • Strong understanding of food hygiene and safety standards.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to take direction and work well in a team.
