The Software Engineering Manager is an experienced, technology leader whose primary responsibility is to oversee and guide team(s) of Agile Delivery Leaders, engineers, and related delivery professionals, in the designing, implementing, and maintaining of an IT product portfolio. They are responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining talent and ensuring the team(s) have the staff, tools, capabilities, and support to meet evolving business needs. They also oversee the implementation of software engineering initiatives and champion best practices while ensuring initiatives deliver the desired results.

Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

  • Provides leadership and direction for a sub-function/portfolio engineering organization across multiple systems and workstreams and through Agile Delivery Leaders.
  • Partners closely with the Business Engagement sub-function/portfolio leaders to understand and support the development of product roadmaps and ensure alignment of the delivery center’s operations roadmaps and investments.
  • Partners closely with Enterprise and Solution Architecture to maintain alignment, gain architectural guidance, manage risks, foster innovation adoption, optimize resources, and drive continuous improvement across IT initiatives and operations.
  • Ensures the delivery center teams they are accountable for have the tools, process, and support in developing new products and capabilities that will be needed to survive and thrive in the midterm and long term.

Talent Management Responsibilities

  • Leads, manages, and directs the activities of the sub-function/portfolio in all aspects of supervisory duties, including, developing effective people strategies, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Mentors’ functional management, first line managers, and associates.
  • Build a culture that supports learning, collaboration, transparency, and inclusiveness.

Operations

  • Ensure accountability for performance and results of the sub-functional/portfolio engineering teams’ delivery of the technology components of the functional, strategic roadmaps.
  • Lead Agile Delivery Leaders to set goals for improving product quality, maintainability, security, and scalability and monitor progress against these goals.
  • Accountable for production and performance of development in production and meeting all relevant service level commitments.
  • Implement and manage software development status reporting, metrics, and benchmarks.
  • Ensure that systems comply with relevant policy, contractual, statutory, and regulatory obligations.
  • Manage relationships with consultants, vendors, and contractors and support negotiation of statements of work and business terms with suppliers.

Required:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in a project management, programming, or systems analysis

Preferred:

  • 5+ years' experience in direct people management
  • Relevant business credentials including LOMA certifications
  • Master’s degree with technology as a core component

  • Fluent in software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Fluent in relevant tools and platforms (e.g., cloud platforms, web technologies, client-server technologies, continuous integration, and deployment), with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
