Job Description:
The Senior Legal Counsel is responsible for leading the legal strategy, directing the management of the company's legal affairs and risk, executing the company's legal initiatives and projects, and providing legal support as a member of cross-functional teams tasked with accomplishing substantive corporate objectives.
The Senior Legal Counsel effectively advises senior management on compliance, risk management, corporate governance and any other legal matters impacting the company's operations. He/she is also responsible for assisting with all aspects of platform and logistics operations under Lazada Group in Malaysia.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal counsel and guidance, as well as broad-based thought leadership and strategic advice.
- Directs the execution and compliance with all Legal processes and procedures. This includes monitoring performance and ensuring adherence to company or group policies.
- Collaborates with other members of the senior management team to develop strategies and initiatives that accomplish the company's business objectives while maintaining legal compliance. Demonstrates decisiveness and dynamic leadership to help the senior management team efficiently reach conclusions, and engages business leaders to identify initiatives and business opportunities where the Legal function can add value or lend expertise, and influence outcomes.
- Proactively provides legal insights on various strategic commercial matters which have broader business implications.
- Protects, defends, and represents the company and its affiliates in external engagements with government authorities, regulators and other external parties.
- Oversees and manages all legal services that are provided within country.
- Interprets laws, regulations and other sources of authority applicable to the company's and its affiliates’ business operations.
- Drafts, reviews and negotiates a diverse array of complex commercial contracts, including both standardized and unique agreements.
- Responsible for the overall performance of the Legal function and in setting Legal department goals which are aligned with organizational goals and allocation of resources as necessary to achieve these goals.
- Provides comprehensive management to the legal staff, including coaching and development, to expand their capabilities and ensure management succession within Legal function.
Requirements:
- Law degree from an accredited law school and at least [6 to 8] years of working experience in a legal corporate environment within a fast-paced, fast-evolving and dynamic environment, preferably working as a Senior Lawyer.
- Successful experience in leading negotiations on complex, high value, contracts, and agreements.
- Exceptionally good communication skills in English and Malay (written and spoken).
- Demonstrable ability to identify and remedy complex legal issues without inviting the services of external legal advice. He/she must also have exceptionally good skills in legal negotiation, and be comfortable in handling dispute resolution matters and incidents, in each case within a fast-paced business environment.
- Result-driven and service-driven individual, has solid problem-solving skills, be highly adaptable and flexible, work comfortably in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, have an ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks and meet tight deadlines, be proactive and self-motivated, have a keen eye for detail, and have an ability to remain calm and composed during times of uncertainty and stress.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to influence cross-functional teams towards a unified direction along with the business’s senior leadership and relevant stakeholders.
