- Produce parts with tight tolerances (e.g., ±0.01mm) for applications requiring high accuracy, such as downhole drill bits, pump impellers, sealing surfaces, and pressure vessel components. - Use micrometers, vernier calipers, and dial indicators to ensure parts meet specific dimensional and geometric tolerances, often to tolerances as tight as ±0.001 inch. - Perform manual operations like boring, drilling, tapping, and thread cutting for custom parts used in pipelines, compressors, and other mechanical systems. - Select appropriate cutting tools (e.g., end mills, face mills, drill bits, turning inserts) based on the material and specific machining operation required. For example, when machining hard metals like Inconel or Monel, selecting the correct high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide inserts is crucial. - Choose the correct materials for machining based on material properties, including strength, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, and machinability. For example, using stainless steel for marine-grade valves or carbon steel for piping components.
